THE POSITION
The Kansas State Board of Education is seeking a highly qualified leader to serve as the superintendent of the Kansas State Schools for the Deaf and Blind. The board would like the successful candidate to assume the responsibilities of the position prior to June 1, 2017.
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have the background, skills and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership.
The following desired characteristics have been identified:
-Innovative leader who has a proven record of a minimum of
three years of leadership and management in special
education, especially in the field of education of students who
are deaf and/or blind.
-Possesses a working knowledge of the importance of bilingual
education and deaf culture.
-Understands effective practices for students with challenges in
addition to blindness or deafness, including deaf-blindness.
-Effective communicator, including the ability to communicate
effectively with all stakeholders in English and ASL. Attaining
minimum conversational ASL within three years of appointment.
-Doctorate degree or Educational Specialist with emphasis in
Education Administration is preferred.
-Valid Kansas Superintendent (District Level) License or obtain
within three years of appointment.

Job Summary: The Department of Humanities, Language, Culture and ASL-I is seeking a full-time language lab coordinator and community liaison for the American Sign Language and ASL-English Interpreting (ITP) Programs. We are looking for someone with strong interpersonal and public relations skills who can work independently and successfully prioritize his/her own workload. The successful candidate must work well under pressure and demonstrate both problem-solving and creative skills. Reliability, dependability, flexibility, initiative, and the ability to maintain confidential information are essential.
This position includes three major areas of focus. The first and largest is managing the tutoring program for ASL students. The second involves performing a large amount of groundwork for the ASL-English interpreting internship program. The third is promoting and fostering the use of the Center for Languages by reaching out to all SLCC language students, by, for example, organizing, advertising and hosting a variety of activities, such as open houses, immersion events, etc.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties: ASL LAB / ITP PROGRAM:
? Coordinate ASL lab tutors and interpreting mentors,
? prepare and supervise the implementation of all ASL lab curriculum, and inform full-time faculty when changes are needed,
? conduct 1010 and 1020 labs intermittently, when needed,
? schedule and administer ASL challenge exams and grade the written portions,
? maintain the ASL/ITP library,
? prepare quality public relation pamphlets and student recruitment materials,
? market ASL and ITP programs,
? coordinate the ITP lab for use by students, and
? maintain the schedule of the recording equipment for full-time faculty.
PUBLIC OUTREACH / WORKING WITH STUDENTS & FACULTY:
? Assist ITP applicants and screen ITP applications,
? screen telephone and videophone calls and take messages,
? disseminate information regarding department programs, occasionally promoting the program at state and national conferences,
? schedule and attend program meetings to record proceedings, and prepare and distribute written minutes.
TP INTERNSHIPS:
? arrange new, and confirm on-going, internships in a timely fashion with community partners, such as schools and various businesses,
? obtain detailed information regarding each position and make that information available on a website and Google spreadsheet,
? communicate all position and temporary interpreting permit requirements to ASL-English interpreter students,
? mentor students in internship selection and in the application process,
? maintain all necessary records regarding internships,
? organize, host and manage mentor workshops and appreciation dinners,
? conduct exit interviews for all parties.
CENTER FOR LANGUAGES:
Promote the use of the Center for Languages by reaching out to all SLCC language students, by organizing, advertising and hosting a variety of activities.
TECHNOLOGY/BUDGET:
? Maintain instructions on how to use software in the lab, and be capable of assisting students in recording their work,
? coordinate with the College IT department to solve technological issues that arise in the lab,
? maintain and update iPads,
? process fiscal and budgetary documents, including requisitions, to purchase equipment and software,
? use Banner to track financial accounts.
Other duties as assigned (receive and distribute mail, make travel arrangements, complete tutor hiring paperwork, etc.).
